Every year hundreds of publications reveal new corrosion inhibitors or reevaluate old ones. Attempts to accurately relate a certain, single characteristic of an inhibitor to its performance have failed, since the same substance may protect the same metal differently in various media. This result leads to the conclusion that inhibitor efficiency is the resultant of several factors. In order to generalize, it becomes necessary to approximate and deliberately overlook some of the factors involved.
