In modern industrial plants using high horsepower, high efficiency turbomachinery, a small amount of foulants in the steam can result in a significant loss of horsepower and a correlated loss of production. These production losses can easily run into tens of thousands of dollars per day. Most of the time these foulants come from the steam producer, either in the form of a conventional boiler or a waste heat system which produces steam by cooling process gasses. In terms of steam generation, these foulants are considered boiler water carryover; or in a slightly different perspective, steam purity.
