During the startup period following a turnaround a leak was detected in the steam superheater coil of a steam/methane reformer furnace. The steam superheater coil was constructed of 2-1/4 Cr-1 Mo steel and austenitic stainless steel. The failure occurred in the stainless steel portion of the coil, and resulted in a complete parting of one stainless steel tube and numerous other cracks that penetrated the entire wall of the tubes. The 2-1/4 Cr-1 Mo steel portion of the steam superheater coil was not cracked.
