Mounting concern is being expressed in coal conversion circles regarding potential problems with hydrogen attack in high temperature coal gasification and liquefaction equipment. While there are legitimate concerns, we believe them to be overstated when appraised in terms of existing knowledge and the favorable experience amassed in petroleum refining and petrochemical processing. The hydrogen-rich environments in many of these established processes are similar to those now being encountered in coal conversion processes in terms of temperatures, pressures and contaminants, notably H2S. Many of those now entering the rapidly growing coal conversion field are not fully familiar with this wealth of pertinent experience. It was therefore considered worthwhile to share some of that experience by preparing this brief review of petroleum industry background.
