The corrosion problems encountered in the pulp and paper industry encompass a wide spectrum of materials inclusive of carbon steels, several types of stainless steels, and nonferrous alloys. A majority of the corrosion problems can be successfully handled with the knowledge of current day corrosion technology. An enhanced service life of critical components can be achieved by means of judicial application of the tools available to a corrosion engineer; namely, (1) material selection, (2) corrosion inhibitors, (3) deposit control and (4) cathodic protection. Factors such as economy, reliability, feasibility and familiarity may influence the selection of the solution to a corrosion problem. Many times, the success of a corrosion control program is closely associated with the recognition of the existence, or potential for occurrence, and the type of corrosion problem in a specific component of the pulp and paper machinery. Once the type of corrosion problem is understood, the critical factors responsible for such a corrosion problem can be analyzed and the decision can be reached regarding a solution.
