Specimens of the materials of construction have been installed in operating reactors at most CANDU nuclear generating stations. These have been used to assess the efficacy of preconditioning the primary circuit, to monitor the corrosion of system materials during operation, shutdown and decontamination and to assess the corrosion resistance of alternative materials under the same in-service conditions. In some stations information from these specimens is augmented by the exposure of experimental components, e.g., pipe elbows, model boilers, feedwater heater tubes.
