Suitability of low alloy nickel steels for applications such as in cryogenic gas plants is clouded by reports of sulfide stress corrosion cracking of these materials in laboratory tests.1) 2) 3) In non-sour systems (H2S-free), the low temperature fracture toughness of low alloy nickel steels is used to advantage in fabrication of vessels for gas separations by low temperature distillation.
