The term "corrosive service" means different things to different people. The proper selection of a piping system for a water of unknown or inconsistent quality may be a more difficult decision than choosing a high alloy material for a chemical process. In any event, the engineer confronted with his particular problem should have at hand an adequate rationale and a logical sequence of operations for the selection of a complete piping system. This may involve interaction with disciplines other than corrosion control engineering, in consideration of size, complexity, pressure, temperature and availability. Standardization is highly desirable, if possible, which it is in many cases. In this regard, the author is much indebted to his former colleagues in the Engineering Department of the Chemicals and Plastics Division of Union Carbide Corporation.
