Naval Anti-Submarine Warfare Patrol Aircraft such as the P-3/Orion spend long periods of time at low altitudes over the open sea. Approximately 25% of an 8 hour mission (1) is spent in a severe marine environment. The aircraft is quite frequently based near sea water where air enriched with chloride and sulfate ions (2) freely deposit those salts on the aircraft. Carrier based aircraft such as the A-3/Skywarrior are sprayed with sea salt on the flight deck and hanger deck (3).
