This paper will be both a design and an operating history of the Pacific Intertie HVDC System. It particularly deals with the operating compatability of this HVDC system with underground plant. Its scope is limited to two areas: first, to how successfully the Intertie has performed its designed function; and second, to the role of ground connection and earth return current in its operations.
