Because of their versatility, availability, and economy, steels are and will continue to be the basic construction materials used in the pulp and paper industry. The word "steels," of course, encompasses a great many alloys, and to the uninitiated the myriad of grades, types, and specification numbers can be rather confusing. This paper is an attempt to categorize the general types of steels used in the pulp and paper industry, and to summarize their properties, with emphasis on corrosion behavior. The basic types of corrosion problems encountered in the pulp and paper industry are in many cases similar to those in other industries utilizing aggressive chemicals. Therefore, a general discussion of the corrosion behavior of steels will be presented, followed by specific examples of steel applications in pulp and paper mill environments.
