The cost of corrosion control in pulp and paper mills has been estimated as high as 20% of the total maintenance budget, 1  and of this a substantial amount goes for corrosion resistant coatings and their application in maintenance painting. In a study and forecast made in 1973 by PULP AND PAPER magazine, 2  the annual cost for replacement paint and coating materials used by this industry in North America was estimated at approximately $31,500,000. Updated with a conservative price increase of 20%, this 1973 figure becomes an annual cost of $37,800,000 in 1976. Based on the assumption that paint and coating materials represent about 20% of the total painting cost, which is reasonably in line with average industry figures and a report by Ken Tator Associates, 3  the estimated total annual cost of coating materials used in maintenance painting is $189,000,000. Such expenditures deserve careful attention as to the type of coatings used and value received in corrosion control.
