Large sums of money are expended each year for repair of corrosion damage to concrete bridges and other transportation structures. It has been estimated recently that $500 million is spent annually to repair bridge decks damaged by corrosion. Other types of concrete structures such as sea walls, piers, offshore oil-drilling rigs and storage stations, prestressed and post-stressed concrete, and concrete in which chlorides have been used as accelerators or introduced with beach sand are examples of structures where the risk of corrosion is great. Many techniques are being tried to combat these corrosion problems. Table I lists various methods currently being examined to control corrosion of reinforcing bars in concrete.
