Furan resins are prepared by homopolymerization of furfuryl alcohol or copolymerization of furfuryl alcohol with formaldehyde using an acid catalyst (Figure 1). Furfuryl alcohol is manufactured by hydrogenation of furfuraldehyde, which in turn is prepared from agricultural waste materials such as oat hulls, corn cobs, and sugar bagasse (Figure 2).
