The corrosion of metals in aqueous electrolytes occurs by an electrochemical mechanism. This implies that there are distinct cathodic and anodic reactions occurring at the metal surface which comprise the corrosion process. There may be other chemical reactions which participate in the process, but they do not alter the fact that the process is essentially electrochemical in nature.
