High strength-to-weight materials are used extensively in high performance ships for increased operational efficiency. The primary materials for high performance ships are 5000 series aluminum alloys for the hull structure and titanium base, stain- less steel and nickel base alloys for appendages such as rudders, stabilizers and propellers. These appendage materials Induce galvanic corrosion of the 5000 series aluminum alloys that is accelerated by high velocity sea water.
