Many years ago when NACE was in its infancy, I was fortunate to be associated with some of its founders and charter members, one of which was Mr. Starr Thayer. Starr had made a trip to Lake Maracaibo to run a Cathodic Protection Study on the life of sheet piling on an oil loading dock. After compiling all of his calculations, he gave the report to the V.P. of Operations telling him, "Don't worry about corrosion. This dock will be good for the next 200 years." The snappy reply from the V.P. was, "Ya, das is goot, but we want something permanent."
