Corrosion of drill pipe has been a problem since the first time that steel drillpipe was used. This problem has often (and to some extent, still is) been ignored. Since the corrosion by-product (rust) is continually abraded away by the side of the hole, the pipe usually comes out of the hole polished and shiny, and the contractor is unaware of metal loss.
