What is MP35N*? It is a vacuum induction plus consumable vacuum arc remelted alloy based on the quaternary of cobalt, nickel, chromium and molybdenum that has an unusually favorable combination of high strength and excellent corrosion resistance to sour well environments. The composition of the MP35N alloy is 35% Ni, 35% Co, 20% Cr and 10% Mo with residual elements such as C, Mn, Si, S and P being as low as possible. Strengthening of the alloy to yield strengths above 200 ksi is carried out by cold working and aging as opposed to the more conventional heat treatment, normalize or quench and temper, used on tubing steels like N80, 4130, etc. It exhibits excellent resistance to such corrosive media as the chloride ion and H2S. Because of its unique strength and corrosion properties, MP35N is considered an outstanding candidate for service in deep sour wells.
