The most efficient design of most products usually includes the use of more than one metal or alloy. Although galvanic corrosion is considered when designing a product, other criteria such as strength, fabricability, cost, availability and appearance often dictate the choice of the metals or alloys that comprise the assembly. These choices result in dissimilar metal combinations which can lead to galvanic corrosion failures unless corrective measures are taken.
