The aircraft carrier steam catapult system is exposed not only to steam and high temperatures, but also to sea water, salt air, jet fuel, hyradulic fluids, lubricants, detergents, solvents, and general neglect during service. While the latter condition is not planned, it often becomes necessary as a function of expediency in conducting missions.
