Commercially available aluminum galvanic anodes containing mercury and zinc have consistently shown electrochemical characteristics superior to aluminum anodes of other compositions in studies conducted by the U. S. Naval Research Laboratory, and others.(1,2,3) In sea water the Al-Hg-Zn anodes have a minimum current capacity of 1250 ampere hours per pound. The closed circuit potential and current output characteristics for this type anode are similar to those for the zinc anodes conforming to specification MIL-A-18001H.
