Several incidences of severe corrosion on naval ship hulls have occurred recently. The possibility of the corrosion being caused by improper grounding during welding has been eliminated in at least some of these cases. However, the source of the currents in many instances has not been established. Field studies have been made in which the recorded hull potential intermittently showed large fluctuations in the positive direction indicating that at some naval berthing sites stray currents do exist.
