The purpose of this paper is to present a summary of telluric current experimental techniques, and telluric current activity in relation to soil conditions, topography, geomagnetic latitude, magnetic storm conditions, and solar cycle. The presentation is directed toward the needs of the corrosion engineer in his application of cathodic protection techniques to extensive buried pipeline systems. Thus, in general, techniques will be described rather than implied and numbers presented to the extent that space permits. However, direct application of the telluric current data to pipeline corrosion problems lies beyond the scope of the paper and of the writer’s expertise.
