Recent intense interest has obviously been due to the occurrence of several earthquakes which have dramatically brought the potential disaster of such occurrences before the scientific and technical community. Notable among these are recent events in Alaska, San Fernando and Nicaragua.(1,2,3,4,5,6) The San Fernando earthquake, particularly, was in an area well instrumented with strong motion seismometers and caused spectacular damage to public structures.
