Corrosion either from natural environment or from man made industry has posed problems for mankind. This has led to the development of protective coatings alongwith improved material of construction for combating corrosion. Earlier developments of protective coatings had limitations with regards to its effectiveness under extreme conditions viz. acids, chemicals, temperature, etc. Some of these problems where protection could not be controlled by these coatings were solved by use of new materials of construction - alloys, costly metals, etc. These were used either for constructing the whole or part of the equipment or lining over the cheaper material of construction. Although technological advancement has made possible production of large variety of alloys and metals, the need for suitable protective coatings which could be applied over base construction material was felt strongly due to the high cost and limited availability of such alloys and metals. This is particularly true for countries like India and other developing countries.
