Ten years of commercial production and marketing effort have shown quite precisely where explosion-bonded clad metals fit in terms of applicability from both the technical and economic viewpoints. The primary objective of this paper is to review this information in terms of specific composite metal product groupings as they have been used for the manufacture of chemical process equipment. Case histories will be employed to document, to the extent that the details are available, reasons for selecting explosion-bonded clad products versus other materials of construction for equipment needed in specific end-use applications. No effort will be expended here to discuss particulars of the explosion-bonding process, which appears to have been discussed adequately in the literature (1, 2, 3).
