Corrosion inhibitors are usually selected on the basis of solubility or dispersibility in the fluids which are to be inhibited. Frequently in a hydrocarbon system, a corrosion inhibitor which is soluble in hydrocarbon is used. In water systems, water soluble corrosion inhibitors are used. Oil soluble-water dispersible corrosion inhibitors are frequently used in systems composed of both hydrocarbon and water.
