The Fast Flux Test Facility (FFTF) is a 400 MWt, sodium cooled, fast test reactor being built on the Hanford Reservation near Richland, Washington. Periodic maintenance and inspection will require that sodium be removed from several components within this facility during the lifetime of the plant. Additionally, prototypes of several of the plant components will be tested prior to FFTF operation. Post-test examination of these components usually requires complete removal of all sodium. Some of these prototype components, such as a primary pump and an In Vessel Handling Machine (IVHM) are designed as plant spares after completion of testing. Consequently, the removal of residual sodium must be done in a manner which will neither prejudice the results of a post-test examination nor damage the component in any manner which would preclude its further use.
