In 1949, the Town of Hempstead, New York, authorized Henry Taylor, one of the pioneers in the field of refuse incineration, to design a refuse burning plant at Merrick, New York. This plant was to incorporate waste heat boilers and produce power so as to be totally independent of the local power system. The plant was placed in initial operation in 1950. Thus began a pioneering experience in waste heat extraction from mass burning of refuse spanning a period of over 20 years.
