Of all methods that have been proposed for disposing of municipal refuse, one of the most useful and most practical appears to be incineration. Incineration can reduce the volume of municipal refuse by a factor of as much as 20, and its weight by as much as one-half. Incineration is fast, does not require large areas of expensive land as does dumping or composting and a by-product of the process, namely, heat, can be used in various ways to help supplement our growing need for energy. So a logical question arises as to why incineration hasn't been accepted and applied more widely as a means of solid waste disposal.
