Failures within the first year of operation of a two-layer castable refractory in the arch or roof of three furnaces in a new Pipe Still caused extensive problems. This paper deals with the materials and supporting stud metallurgical investigations made to determine the reasons for refractory deterioration and presents conclusions as to the factors believed responsible.
