In the last ten years underground electric distribution systems in rural areas have progressed from being unusual to being quite common in some parts of the country. During the same period pipelines have continued to be built. Since a long-distance pipeline must cross rural areas, there is a steadily increasing possibility of interference between pipeline cathodic protection systems and rural underground distribution systems.
