Non-chromate cooling water treatment is not something new. It was the first type of cooling water treatment long before the current environmental enthusiasm. Although chromate has been widely promoted for at least 50 years, it is not always used in cooling water treatment for a combination of reasons of which pollution is only one facet. This paper is a brief summary of various types of cooling water equipment and treatment and their relative problems with emphasis on how to operate without chromates.
