A primary obstacle to successful drilling and completion of deep (20,000'+), sour wells is sulfide stress cracking (SSC), a catastrophic cracking mode of failure that affects high strength steels in environments containing hydrogen sulfide. Loss or blowout of a high pressure sour well could have disastrous consequences in terms of life and money.
