Many of the tests used to evaluate corrosion in automotive cooling systems are based on the measurement of weight losses of metal test coupons or on the visual examination of component parts(1). Such tests include laboratory glassware tests, simulated service tests, and fleet car tests. These tests may be run from two weeks to two years, and the results provide only average corrosion rates for the time of exposure. Little information is provided about transient effects of operating conditions during the course of the test.
