The need for on-line corrosion monitoring has become increasingly important to the chemical process industry for several reasons.

  1. New plants are trending toward large, single-line process units which must achieve long continuity of operation to be economical. The new plant may be an enlarged old process with some innovations, or it may be a new process with greater demands on materials of construction.

  2. Manpower considerations may not permit an extensive corrosion coupon testing program for an operating plant.

  3. Information regarding corrosion of costly process equipment requires continuous updating to ensure long life and to identify conditions which may jeopardize serviceability. With continuous monitoring, process corrections can be made, unscheduled shutdowns minimized, and equipment repairs and replacement properly planned and scheduled during orderly shutdowns.
