The Institute of Gas Technology has in operation in Chicago a coal gasification pilot plant based on its HYGAS Process. This plant (Figure 1) is part of a program, begun in 1964, which is currently funded by the U.S. Department of the Interior, Office of Coal Research, and the American Gas Association. The program calls for the simultaneous development of a number of gasification schemes, the results of which will become the basis for the ultimate design, construction, and operation of a demonstration plant.
