The simplest descriptive definition of corrosion is that it is the chemical or electrochemical reaction between a metal and its environment resulting in corrosion products.1  Control of corrosion most commonly consists of attempts to prevent, limit, or utilize these reactions. Painting and other coating procedures attempt to prevent the reactions. Alloying, galvanic protection, and passivation attempt to limit the reaction or utilize the reaction to prevent further reaction.
