At first glance, making plastic lined piping appears to be simply a matter of fabricating a plastic liner and slipping it into a piece of steel tubing. However, as is usually the case in the real world, such a view is an extreme over-simplification. In manufacturing plastic lined piping a number of design concepts and fabrication routes are available. Both design concepts and fabrication techniques have a direct and often sizeable bearing on the performance characteristics of plastic lined piping products. Specific performance factors affected include pressure ratings, vacuum performance, thermal cycling performance, permeation performance, and chemical resistance. This paper will examine the major relationships between design and fabrication factors and performance.
