The design of buildings has long been the exclusive field of the professional mechanical, structural and electrical engineers. In the main building, plans and specifications are prepared by Architectural-Engineering (A-E) firms. The Architectural-Engineering firms are retained by the building owners and have the responsibility for representing the owners during construction, start-up and further, have the responsibility for final acceptance of the building upon completion. Building firms and contractors also will have engineers in their employ.
