Field testing to determine the effects of deicing salt usage on the corrosion of automobiles began as early as 1946 (1). From early testing with flat metal coupons hung on car grills and bumpers, testing techniques have progressed through vehicle simulators to full scale, long term field tests using the complete vehicle as the "test coupon”. Interest has become international. Considerable research has been done in Canada beginning in 1960 (2), and more recently in the United Kingdom, Germany, and Finland.
