Before going into a discussion of the standard types of coatings and what can be expected in the near future, it might be advantageous to take a look at the size and the importance of the coatings industry. As can be seen in Table I the sale of coatings in 1966 in the United States of America amounted to 2.34 billion dollars, an amount larger than the sales in Europe and way ahead of the figures for both Japan and Latin America. That the coatings sales will rapidly increase is evidenced by the fact that a total sales of 2.7 billion dollars is expected in the U.S.A. for 1970. It is important to note that the American Painting and Decorating Contractors are responsible for a large usage of coatings in the amount of 590 million dollars in 1966, which makes up about twenty-five percent of the total sales. See Table II.
