Chemical control and monitoring of cooling water systems are generally limited to cooling tower and spray pond circuits, because costs are prohibitive for treatment (other than chlorination) of once-through systems. Exceptions are selected loads cooled by clarified or softened make-up water on the way to a circulating system or other uses.
