The prevention of corrosion and of stress corrosion cracking of metal structures in airframes and missiles is a problem of increasing concern to the aerospace industry. Although the apparent solution is the use of more corrosion resistant alloys and tempers, this approach is not always possible because of other requirements of the material. In such instances, alloys and tempers that are susceptible to stress corrosion cracking to varying degrees may be used if adequate protection measures are taken. To ensure the success of these applications, careful attention must be given to the design of the components, assembly of the structures and, finally, to protection of the metal surfaces.
