Hanford’s N Reactor, located in the southeast corner of Washington State, is the world’s largest dual purpose nuclear plant. It is capable of supplying by-product steam used for generating 800 megawatts of electricity while producing plutonium or other nuclear products for the nation’s defense. The reactor is operated by Douglas United Nuclear, Inc. for the United States Atomic Energy Commission. The reactor is a graphite-moderated pressure-tubed type using high purity pressurized water as the primary coolant. The primary system piping is carbon steel, the surfaces in contact with the coolant within the reactor core are Zircaloy-2 and the heat exchanger surfaces are stainless steel and Inconel.(1)
