Whenever a waste disposal problem is encountered by chemical or sanitary engineers, the first question to be answered concerns the definition of the material for disposal. Chemical cleaning waste solvents present special problems in attempts at characterization. This paper describes the chemical and physical nature of such waste streams from industrial chemical cleaning operations. Because the disposal of wastes from radioactive decontamination processes presents special considerations and are discussed by other papers at this meeting, such disposal problems are not considered here. Some methods of treating cleaning wastes are discussed.
