The measurement of metallic potentials in a given electrolyte permits arranging the metals in a tabular manner wherein the active metals are at the top and more passive metals at the bottom of the list. A reference electrode usually permits measuring this galvanic potential and infers which metal of a couple will be corroded as the less noble metal and the metal that will be galvanically protected as the more noble metal. Some metals and alloy systems exhibit more than one potential and may appear in either the active or passive region.
