The power for a rural underground system is generally brought to the periphery of the area by an overhead distribution system, and on our system it is at 7200 volts. The supplying source is connected to a fused disconnect switch, or a protecting oil switch located under the line near the top of the pole for safety purposes. A lightning arrester is always connected at this point to protect the switch and all of the underground components from lightning surges.
