Commonwealth Edison Company provides electrical services to most of the northern 1/3 of Illinois including its two largest cities Chicago and Rockford. This territory has enjoyed a healthy growth rate in most all areas of commerce during the past ten years. Outstanding expansion has occurred in building new residences both single and multiple family. Large subdivisions of single family residences have sprung up in the fields surrounding all the cities and towns in the territory. It is the intentions of this paper to describe the underground residential distribution system used by C.E. Co. to provide electric service to these homes.
